New Lighting Effects Added - Acme Dynamo 4 Light Pack

December 27th, 2009

The Acme Dynamo Party Scan light  is available to hire either as a single unit, in pairs,  or with 4 of them on a stand.

The light produces insensely coloured shapes and paterns on the walls, floors and ceilings of your venue. The patterns and colours change with the beat of the music. Each unit has its own internal microphone to pick up that beat.

If you use more than one dynamo, you can link them together so that they all do the same thing at the same time or without the link, each one will do something different. It is a matter of personal preference which of these 2 modes is the best.

In the manufacturer’s videos, the background music has a very fast beat, hence the lighting also moves very quickly. Please bare that in mind when viewing the video.

Wedding Magic Kent - A New Services For Stargazer Clients

December 23rd, 2009

Stargazer have formed a loose business relationship with a company called Wedding Magic Kent, a well-established entertainment company that supplies close-up magicians and table magicians in Kent, Essex and London.

The intention at the outset is merely to add Wedding Magic Kent to the range of services we already recommend. However, it is hoped that we will be able to forge a stronger bond with the company in the future.

Wedding Magic Kent’s website can be found at http://weddingmagickent.co.uk or simply click here . . .  Corporate Entertainment London .

Alternatively, you can ring their founder Paul Howes on 01277 351028. Paul will be happy to discuss your requirements and check availability and prices for you.

New Lights - Acme Dynamo Party Scan

August 9th, 2009

Stargazer are always updating the lighting effects in their hire fleet. We have now added the Acme Dynamo Party Scan. You can hire a single unit or a pair or even 4 of them on a lighting stand.

The unit produces different coloured shapes and patterns on walls, floors and ceiling of the room and has an inbuilt microphone which senses the beat and moves the lightbeams  in time to the music . . . . .  Hence, in the manufacturer’s video below, because it is a fast song, the beams also move quickly but with slower music the beams would also move slowly. It is a very well thought out, versatile lighting effect !

The first video (click the link below) is with 4 lights … Enjoy !

Stargazer On The Road Again

August 3rd, 2009

This weekend has been another very busy one for Stargazer Discos with jobs scattered all over the place.

As usual we were fully booked but what made this weekend really memorable was the sheer amout of travelling that had to be done. Since the demise of Yellow Pages and the advent of the net, clients are drawn to Stargazer from all over the South of England - Not just the area in which the localised Yellow Pages was published.

On Saturday 2 DJs headed off to Norwich for a wedding, staying overnight at the fabulous Gothic House Bed and Breakfast, owned and run by Clive Harvey (Details below.)

On Sunday ie today, we headed off to Dorking for another wedding reception disco. Whereas tomorrow it’s back on the road again, this time to Ashford in Kent  - For a wedding disco in a marquee.

Next Thursday, we head off for Richmond for a corporate Karaoke Event.

Yet Another Testimonial

August 3rd, 2009

Hardly a week goes by without somebody taking the time and trouble to sent in a card, letter or email thanking one of the DJs for their efforts . . .  This week it was our DJ Simon’s turn to have praise heaped on his shoulders. The card read as follows  . . .

To Simon (Stargazer Discos)

Just a quick note to say a HUGE thank you for such a great evening, when you did the music for our Wedding Reception on 18th July 2009.

Not only were you polite, nice and very professional, you also played just the type of music we love !

We would highly recommend your company

Thanks Again

Long Awaited Office Move Now Completed

July 16th, 2009

In spite of the current recession, Stargazer have never been busier ! - In the first 9 months of 2009 we had a record number of enquiries for our services - I guess we must be doing something right !

Around Christmas last year (always a busy time for us), we decided that enough was enough, there simply wasn’t enough room in our current office. We had been operating from the small premises since way back in 1986  ie 4 years after Stargazer was originally started by its  founder, DJ Graham Reece.

Back in the 80’s, Graham was simply a “one-man-band” DJ  running a small part time business from his bedroom  - By the end of 2008, we had grown to 5 DJs not one and an office which is manned on rotation by 3 and soon to be 4 people - Not to mention Twinkle Starr (TS),  the office cat ! Yet we  were all still crammed into the same small space.

You could certainly say that a move was long overdue !

We registered with several estate agents and letting agents and throughout the winter months DJ Mike Starr (MS)(now the longest serving member of staff, since Graham/ the founder’s untimely death)  and Stargazer’s trusty secretary for the last 10 years, Dena Chambers (DC) looked  at about a dozen new properties. However, for various reasons [ ... nowhere for clients or staff to park, too expensive, too noisy, too smelly in one case etc etc ], we simply could not find one we liked.

Then somebody suggested moving to another part of our existing building, which fortunately we own. We had completely discounted that idea originally as the room in question, although it was two and a half times the size of our existing one, needed major renovation. However, comparing the cost of moving to new premises with the cost of completely renovating one of the office upstairs, the 2nd option won hands down ! - The move, when it came, would also be a lot easier.

So, since February 2009, we have been working to create a new larger head office of which we can be truly proud. As of Wednesday 7th October 2009, this is what we have done so far …

  • Builder Steve James (SJ) put on a new office roof.
  • We called in our friend, designer Alan Harrington (AH) who drew up plans for the new office layout for free  - Thanks Al.
  • And while he was at it  (AH) steam-stripped the ancient wallpaper.
  • (SJ) removed an old gas fire.
  • (SJ) re-filled and re-plastered the gap it left .
  • We called in electrician Richard James (RJ) - No relation to Steve - who  re-sited the door entry system box.
  • (SJ) re-plastered walls and ceiling.
  • (SJ) re-painted all the walls and ceiling (magnolia, naturally).
  • Called in the Ken Rhodes Window Company who installed brand new, double-glazed,  fully opening windows.
  • Called in BT who installed 2 phone extensions from the old office.
  • Called in Virgin Media who installed a fax line extension from the old office.
  • (We will be able to keep all our 3 existing phone numbers.)
  • (MS) bought  a ton of 3 way plastic trunking for the electrical,  phone and data cables - and had it shipped down from Liverpool of all places
  • Had the trunking installed (A big thank you to DJ and all round handyman Tony Adams (TA) for doing this huge job for free !)
  • Electrician (RJ) returned and installed 12 neat looking electrical points in the trunking.
  • (RJ) also installed some brand new modern looking spotlights.
  • Called in AJS Blinds from Chigwell, who designed, made and installed some swish looking white venetian blinds.
  • Called in Paul Howes (PH) of  www.itauthority.co.uk who installed 12 data sockets and offered a ton of great advice about phone systems, broadband, internet security etc
  • (PH) also installed an inpressive looking Netgear central  junction box - So we can site computers, printers etc etc anywhere in the new office and they will all be able to “talk to one another”.
  • (PH) re-configured our www.bethere.co.uk 24 meg broadband modem.
  • (MS) successfully completed  the equally technically challenging job of buying some very tasteful floating alcove shelves from IKEA.
  • Andrew Chambers (AC), our secretary Dena’s son (a builder by trade) measured up for a new floor and carpet tiles.
  • (PH) got all the data sockets working and configured them for broadband - The new office is now on the net with a static IP address - whatever that means -  Hello World !
  • (TA) Returned and finished of putting the masking plates on the trunking. Glued it all together and masticed over the gaps - He did a great job - Afterwards he began putting up the Ikea shelves.
  • (AC) Turned up on time and accompanied (MS) to Selco, where they bought hardboard flooring and screws. (AC) filled the floor and finished off the shelves which (TA) had begun - A far more challenging task than anybody would have anticipated, finally completed !
  • Finally on Monday 10th August 2009, DJs Simon Boyes and Mike Starr, with a lot of help from Mike’s other half Shelley, dismantled the bulky desks in the old office, and moved them upstairs. Simon then re-assembled them and slotted them into their allocated slots. After that, the rest of the furniture and chairs and computers were moved.
  • Mike and Simon plugged the computers and printers into the network and thankfully everything worked ok. For the first time ever, we had 3 desks, each with either 1 or 2 dedicated printers.
  • The following day, DJ Paul Howes, who also runs IT Authority paid another visit and did a great job of networking all the computers and printers together, so we can now view any file from any machine and print or scan on any printer. Fantastic !
  • Mike and Shelley moved all the old files and paperwork upstairs - taking the opportunity to throw out any ancient paperwork or broken files.
  • DJ Tony Adams came up trumps, supplying an Electrolux portable airconditioner for the new office, free of charge - Well done Tony !
  • Holidays and our craftsmen’s other work commitments somewhat delayed further progress for quite a while but around the middle of September 2009, we finally managed to source some top quality carpet tiles at a reasonable cost.
  • Then, around the start of October 2009 Andrew Chambers returned and did a fantastic job fitting them.
  • On the same day (MS) bought a top of the range Fellows Heavy Duty  Cross Cut scanner to grace the new office, replacing 2 tired old Tesco personal ones which were more trouble than they were worth.
  • So, as you can see, an enormous amount of work has already been done but there is still a small amount of finishing touches to add.

    • (MS) will buy a new black ash coloured desk for Shelley and a very comfy and hideously expensive new black leather, high-back, chair for himself  (He deserves it ! )
    • (PH) will return and re-configure the cabling in the trunking to allow both Mike and Dena to have 2 phone lines on each of their respective desks without a mass of wires everywhere. This idea replaces the planned BT cordless phone system for each desk / staff member and saves several hundred pounds
    • (MS) will buy a netbook / laptop and install it in the old office, so it can be used occasionally both as a computer and to watch TV on.
    • Mid October - Everyone involved in the building of the new office is invited for the official opening (MS) breathes a sigh of relief and cracks open the Champagne.

We will be posting some pics showing the new head office. I know you are all anxious to see how Twinkle Starr (TS), the office cat is coping with her new environment !

    Stay tuned !

    Stargazer Go To Belgium !

    July 13th, 2009

Stargazer Discos have worked the length and breadth of the UK and have, on many occasions, sent DJs overseas. Up until recently we had never worked in Belgium.

We had a call from the Master of our local Masonic Lodge. He explained that once a year members of the Lodge go abroad for a no-expense-spared social weekend.

Last year they all took themselves off to Bruges. Everybody had a great time, they loved the hotel, thought the food was great and had a fantastic time sightseeing. It was so enjoyable that they decided to come back for more this year. The only “fly in the ointment” was the entertainment. Last year, they had asked the hotel to arrange a DJ for them ….

Clearly, the hotel receptionist to whom they spoke had no idea what sort of clients to expect. Anybody who has ever attended a Masonic function will tell you that the members are mostly well-spoken business people, aged between 35 and 65.

As they toddled along the corridor from the hotel restaurant to the “ballroom”, a deafening thumping noise started. They opened the door to find speakers stacked from floor to ceiling, strobes flashing and a lightshow “designed to impress.” A trendy looking, Flemmish-speaking, Techno DJ in his early 20’s was in charge of the decks !

He looked somewhat crestfallen when a bunch of middle aged English people walked into the room and told him in no uncertain terms to “Turn that racket down ! ” It was not really his fault, clearly he hadn’t been briefed properly by the hotel.

After establishing that house and techno were the only genres he carried and the volume of the music was unlikely to go any lower than mark 6 on the Richter scale, the guests decided to beat a hastly retreat to the nearest bar.

This year, it was a case of “once bitten, twice shy” - Rather than chance a similar fiasco, the Lodge members decided it would probably be better to use a professional disco company from London and take the DJ over to Belgium with them. Hence the call to Stargazer.

They booked 2 DJs from us, one for the Friday and one for the Saturday night. On the first evening it was a “music and general knowledge quiz” and on the second, a classic disco. The guests could not have been nicer. Everyone had a great time, including the pair of Stargazer deejays who ran the 2 events. We also had a chance, on the Sunday, to join the group for a spot of sightseeing around Bruges.

DJ vs iPod - Let Battle Commence !

    July 11th, 2009

If you have ever considered using an iPod as entertainment for your party or wedding reception, you must listen to this podcast.

This is an American not a British podcast. It was put together by an American company called iMatrimony.

Be warned - It is a little cheesy at the start, particularly the opening music and credits but bare with it, the topics discussed are equally relevant on both sides of the Atlantic and the advice given is almost exactly the same as we give.

Tom Russo, a DJ from a company called Spectrum Entertainments, discusses (quite fairly) the pros and cons of hiring a DJ, or using an iPod for your special occasion.

Please turn up the speakers on your computer, then click the link below and wait a minute or so for the Podcast to load up and start. Enjoy !
